Construction of Ford’s biggest manufacturing complex will provide work for hundreds of union millwrights
Union millwrights from across the South and beyond will be needed to build the largest auto-production complex in Ford Motor Company’s history. Ford announced last year it will build the $5.6 billion project in Stanton, Tennessee.
The Western Region of the SSMRC is looking at expanded growth in both the power-generation and conveyor/distribution markets over and above the 2022 spring season growth. Multiple new construction and maintenance outages have been added to our work scope, including several airport expansions.
The first half of 2022 has been very busy. This is a great time to be a millwright as well as a contractor partner of the SSMRC.
The busy spring nuclear outage season presented a few challenges. With 12 turbine outages from February through April and a total call for just over 725 millwrights, we knew it would be a logistics hurdle.
Through our partnerships with contractors, we identify upcoming projects and inform our business partners of bid opportunities for those projects. I’d like to share with you here some information about projects on the horizon.

The Western Region of the SSMRC has been focused on growing market share in the automation, facilities-maintenance, light-conveyor/food-and-beverage, and wind-turbine-maintenance industries.
In the Central Region, our industry partners have kept our members working and prospering during 2021. As of September 2021, we have increased our membership by 1.4%, bringing our total number of members to 1,515.

Entering the Fall 2021 nuclear-outage season, demand for millwrights across the United States was stretched to the maximum. The Southern States Millwright Regional Council’s Nuclear Office was tasked with providing 500-plus millwrights for 10 scheduled outages, including six outages starting in October.
