SSMRC members and Local 1192 provide meal for miners on strike in Alabama

Clint Smith, business agent for Local 1192, with UMWA members after he delivered 100 meals to their strike site in Brookwood, Alabama.

Thanks to donations from SSMRC members, Millwright Local 1192 provided 100 meals on April 20 to miners on strike in Brookwood, Alabama. Local 1192 members Mitch Howton, a former coal miner, and Jack Wadkins, who heads Local 1192’s political operations, spearheaded a collection for the Brookwood miners. They took up donations from other SSMRC members working on a project in Arkansas. Local 1192 matched the member contributions, and business agent Clint Smith delivered barbecue sandwiches and chips from Bob Sykes Bar-B-Q to United Mine Workers of America members striking against unfair labor practices at Warrior Met Coal. Smith met with approximately 100 UMWA members and several international representatives. “They were very thankful for the lunch and hopeful of a new contract,” Smith said.
