Senator’s plan would raise taxes on 40% of Americans, end Social Security, Medicare

A proposal by a Republican U.S. senator from Florida would increase income taxes for the lowest-earning 40% of Americans and allow all federal legislation to “sunset” within five years, meaning programs including Social Security, Medicare, and more would end unless Congress reauthorized them.

Rick Scott, a former Florida governor who won a U.S. Senate seat in 2018 and is now chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, proposed his “11 Point Plan to Rescue America” earlier this year.

States where the most people would be affected by tax hikes under the plan are Southern ones, including Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. Read more about the proposal here.
