Your Learning & Personal Growth

Did you know lifelong learning can:

  • Increase mental well-being by helping prevent depression;
  • Keep you relevant and employable in your trade; and
  • Reduce your risk for dementia.

Research has shown that lifelong learning contributes to a sense of fulfillment. It’s also good for job security. Why do we have unemployed people in a market where employers scream “shortage”?  SKILLS.

To increase your employability, expand your skills and certifications. You have access to free continuing education through our union training centers. Training courses and programs not only increase your work opportunities, but also improve your mental and physical well-being by providing benefits associated with lifelong learning. Increasing your marketability also can reduce fears of not being able to support yourself and/or your family.

Best classes to take now:

As of this writing in May 2021, EST Wayne Jennings said the most growth is happening in the automotive and distribution industries. He recommended the following courses for millwrights who want to make sure they have in-demand skills.

  • Conveyance courses such as Power Transmission
  • Mechanical Print Reading
  • Machinery Installation
  • Certified classes, with the most important being the Certified Rigger and Signaler course. This class no longer offers a refresher course, so when the certification expires, you need to retake the course.
  • The Millwright Math course (to refresh your knowledge)
  • Forklift and Aerial Lift courses
  • MW16 and OSHA 30 safety courses, to keep safety at the forefront and meet contractors’ requirements

And it isn’t all about work. Maybe there is something you have always wanted to learn to do, like flyfishing. Learning a new skill gives you a perfect excuse to plan an adventure. See more on that in the Your Adventure, Artistic Expression, & Leisure page.
