Central Region members and contractors alike have been busy within the power-gen and automotive industries.
Along the gulf coast, Black & Veatch keep members busy at Southern Company’s Plant Barry, installing two new combine cycle Mitsubishi turbines, Unit 8. The project is expected to be completed and producing power in November 2023.
Plant Barry Unit 8, when complete, has the potential to be one of the most efficient natural gas combined cycle plants in the country, generating around 726 megawatts of electricity.
National Steel city has begun an expansion project during the first quarter of this year at AM/NS Calvert Steel Mill, installing a new EAF furnace. In Central Alabama, Toyota in Huntsville expects to complete the new four-cylinder engine line installation in the second quarter of 2023. The new engine lines can produce combustion and hybrid electric powertrains for Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

General Motors in Springhill, Tennessee, has been an outstanding manhour producer for the region and employed many SSMRC millwrights. Some projects have ended within the facility. However, the general assembly, along with the paint and body shop still have ongoing work to keep members busy through 2024.
General Motors’ Stamping Plant project is projected to end in the third quarter of 2023.
Ultium Cells, a joint venture of LG Energy Solutions and General Motors, announced investing 2.3 billion into a second battery manufacturing plant at the GM Springhill site. This project is underway and expected to be completed in 2024.
A major project on the horizon is the Ford Blue Oval, Stamping Plant. Millwrights are projected to be onsite in September 2023. Please reach out to your local agent and put yourself on the OOW list if you are interested in working on any of these projects.
Millwrights are in high demand across the SSMRC 11-state footprint, recruitment is a high priority, and we need members to accommodate all upcoming projects.
