2023 has been busy, and SSMRC millwrights will be in high demand within the automotive and power-generation industries across our footprint this fall. Recruitment is a high priority, and we need members to accommodate all of the upcoming projects headed our way.

August 2023 Western Region Work Update

The Western Region of the SSMRC is preparing for another busy fall season. Work will be plentiful and spread out across the four-state region with multiple petrochemical and power-generation projects starting in September.

Millwrights avert forced shutdown by spotting leaking pipeline during outage at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant

The vigilance of two UBC millwrights working at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant near Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, prevented an emergency shutdown of a unit at the plant, which supplies electricity to approximately 1.3 million homes.

New instructor Dustin Bell values challenges and takes pride in the millwright craft and union

Dustin Bell of Atkins, Arkansas, joined Local 216 in 2015 and worked as a foreman for University Plant Services. “My specialty was reciprocating compressors, and I always enjoyed working on them,” he says. In April, Bell began teaching at the Russellville, Arkansas, training center.

Responsibilities include direct supervision of instructors, admin staff and apprentices, including management of all training center activity associated with apprentice training, program related advising, scheduling, curriculum evaluation, recruiting, and evaluation of instructors. Collaboration with coordinator in program development and implementation for apprenticeships as well as journeyman upgrade programs.

Davis-Bacon Act updates mean higher pay, expanded coverage, more worker protections on projects headed our way

The U.S. Labor Department has announced comprehensive updates to the Davis-Bacon Act that will raise pay for many construction workers (including millwrights), help ensure prevailing wages keep pace with actual wages, expand coverage to modern energy projects, beef up enforcement, and protect workers from retaliation.

Two laws expand protections for pregnant, nursing workers

Two new laws that expand protections for pregnant and nursing workers are now in effect. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act increases protections for those who need private lactation spaces.

Receive text reminders about expiring training credentials

The Carpenters International Training Fund has announced a text-notification option that became available Aug. 1. This functionality allows members to opt-in to receive text notifications for qualifications or certifications due to expire in 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days.

One hundred and forty-five SSMRC members reached leadership milestones in June and July while attending Third-Year Apprentice and 212 Journeymen classes at the UBC International Training Center in Las Vegas.

Victory for Fair Pay, Benefits & Unionizing Rights!

During the Trump administration, the National Labor Relations Board tried to hurt our unions and members by claiming construction workers and others, like millwrights, who do irregular work are not employees but small businesses, or independent contractors.

Alabama exempts overtime pay from state taxes

Workers in Alabama will have a temporary reprieve from state income taxes on overtime pay in 2024 and part of 2025, thanks to a bill the governor signed into law June 9. The Southern States Millwrights supports this action, and the legislation had unanimous, bipartisan support.

With the weather heating up, it's important to know your rights regarding working in hot temperatures. Let your supervisor, job steward or business agent know if you have any jobsite health and safety concerns, including those related to extreme heat.

Jason B. Engels is appointed as Southern District Vice President

Jason B. Engels has been appointed Southern District Vice President for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Engels served as an Executive Secretary-Treasurer (EST) within the UBC for over 18 years. Most recently, the Central South Carpenters Regional Council.

Southern Construction Industry Leader Dennis Donahou Retires

After a successful 47-year career in the Southern USA’s construction industry, Dennis Donahou has retired. He leaves his post as District Vice President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) Southern District. There he oversaw more than 20,000 union carpenters and millwrights working and living in the country’s 11 southern states.

Bottom-up organizing is an excellent way of recruiting within our organization. If you know of any mechanically inclined individuals who want a lifelong career, put them in touch with your local business representative, and let's get them to work.

Technical school partnership helps grow membership in Tennessee

On May 17, Local 1554 business agents William Condon and Jesse Beilig spoke with Lincoln Technical Institution graduates about career opportunities available in the millwright trade. Current students from the welding, diesel, and automotive programs were also in attendance with these graduates.

May Member Spotlight – Jeremy Kastberg

Growing up, we tend to look up to our parents and grandparents, as positive influences, and mentors. We often strive to follow in their footsteps, as we walk through normal, everyday life. That was no different for Local 1192’s Jeremy Kastberg. He is a fourth-generation millwright, who for the last 8 years, has been devoted to building a prosperous career in the industry that has given so much to his family for many decades. Being a millwright is a tough career, filled with many rigorous challenges, but Kastberg is no stranger to hard work. Before joining the millwright trade, he served 10-years in the United States Army National Guard.

Western Region Director Update – April 2023

The SSMRC’s motto is “Safe, Productive, Professional”. Safety is always first in everything that we do, and we should not only adhere to that standard, but we should educate others on our jobs and speak out when there are issues that need to be addressed. No millwright wants to be injured on a job and no employer wants someone on their job to be hurt. As union members you should not fear retaliation from pointing out safety concerns or taking the time to ensure the task is safe for everyone involved. We expect that from every member. From the brand-new apprentice to the seasoned journeyperson. You will always have the support of SSMRC representatives and leadership if there are ever safety issues.

Most Locals have nominations and elections that are coming up for their local union. I encourage you to nominate and vote for someone who will represent your local in those positions to a higher standard. If running for a position in your local union, I ask that you read the constitution and fully understand the duties of the position that you are campaigning for. If elected, I encourage you to perform your duties that are assigned by the constitution and to take these positions seriously.

Recruitment is a vital part of growing and strengthening the union, and the SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee has made recruitment a top priority for its 2023-2024 goal cycle. Nashville-area training center ready for equipment installation

Construction of a 25,000-square-foot training center in La Vergne, Tennessee, near Nashville, is complete. The next step is installing training equipment, and a grand opening is slated for May. The new building consists of 20,000 square feet of training space and 5,000 square feet of office and administrative areas.

Solar-panel-manufacturing expansion creating union millwright work in Georgia

Union millwrights are already working on a $2.5 billion expansion announced yesterday of solar-panel manufacturing facilities in northwest Georgia. Those millwrights and others will be needed at the Dalton factory during the next year, and opportunities for SSMRC members to work at a similar factory in Cartersville, Georgia, are likely, said Robert Strickland, business agent for Millwright Local 1263, which covers Georgia and the Carolinas.

Q1 – Nuclear Update

It has been a busy spring season for the nuclear industry. Nearly all seventeen projects for the spring of 2023 season have started or will be starting soon. These projects are expected to end at the middle or end of May. The spring season produced a lot of work for our members, requesting manpower of around 800 millwrights.

I am pleased to report on the first quarter of 2023 for the Eastern Region of the SSMRC. As we have forecasted, the employment opportunities have been endless. Our district is on track to shatter our previous years' hours worked, which is great news for our brotherhood. We are alive and well and growing exponentially. There has never been such a great time to be a union millwright in the South.

Local 1554 welcomes Jesse Beilig as its newest business agent

Local 1554 has welcomed a familiar face as the newest business agent for Local 1554 out of Nashville. In January, Jesse Beilig assumed the business agent role covering middle and West Tennessee, replacing former Local 1554 business agent, Steve Williams, who has since taken a position as the Nuclear Representative for the SSMRC.

Get to know Jacob Wooten, the newest SSMRC administrative assistant

Jacob Wooten joined the SSMRC team in late February and serves as the Administrative Assistant for the Birmingham office. Wooten is a native of Birmingham, AL with a diverse educational and work background. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in both Applied Math and Music. After graduation, he worked in the financial industry, where he quickly advanced moving from a teller position to a role as an accounting and finance specialist.

March Member Spotlight – Ethan Neville

From a young age, Local 1000 member Ethan Neville, knew he was destined to work in the construction industry. Growing up, Neville kept himself busy working on cars and finding ways to expand his knowledge of the construction industry. After graduating high school, he used his knowledge to begin working as a heavy machinery rigger, traveling the country before making the courageous decision to become a union millwright. While learning the millwright way of things has posed some challenges for Neville, he has adjusted well and excelling quickly in his career.

Tennessee bill would limit ways to form a union

A bill in the Tennessee Legislature would micro-manage how votes for union representation are conducted at private businesses. The bill would make a secret-ballot election the only option for forming a union for employees who work for an employer who has received economic incentives from the state of Tennessee.

Arkansas House passes bill paving way for child-labor exploitation, lower overall wages

The Arkansas House of Representatives approved a bill Feb. 22 that would eliminate work permits that require children under 16 to provide proof of age, job and work-schedule descriptions, and parental consent to the state Labor Department. The Arkansas Senate is expected to consider a companion bill next week.

New training center dovetails with North Carolina brewery-to-pet-food-factory conversion, supplying contractors with skilled labor

The launch of a $450-million project to turn a brewery in North Carolina into a pet-food factory lined up perfectly with the opening of a union training center in that state, providing hands-on learning for newly recruited SSMRC millwrights and a skilled labor force for contractors working at the site.

January Member Spotlight – Drew Ohorodnyk

Twenty-four years ago, in the state of Pennsylvania, Drew Ohorodnyk began his journey as a millwright and never looked back. Throughout the years, Ohorodnyk has worked extremely hard to advance in the trade, where he has been presented the opportunity to use his skills to teach others the trade that has given so much to his family. In 2020, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he is currently a part-time millwright instructor, while still working on his tools.

American Rescue Plan program saves 350,000 union pensions from 60% cuts

President Biden announced on Dec. 8 the release of $36 billion to prevent drastic cuts to the pensions of more than 350,000 union workers and retirees. Funded by the American Rescue Plan’s Special Financial Assistance Program, this is the largest award of federal financial support for worker and retiree pension security.

There is currently 14 scheduled outages for the spring 2023 season. This will be the largest outage season the SSMRC has seen in many years. To meet the manpower requirements, we will need all nuclear hands-on deck. There will be multiple opportunities available for those who would like to join the nuclear millwright field.

Western Region Work Update – December 2022

The Western Region is expecting to have a busier spring outage season than we had last year. To put that into perspective – last spring was the busiest the Western Region has been since the council was formed in 2010. Last year, we worked more than 200,000 man-hours over our previous highest year.

Labor Department ends duplicative apprenticeship program that aimed to weaken union apprenticeships

The Labor Department has announced a final rule that ends the Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Program, adding it will direct its resources toward Registered Apprenticeships. (Union apprenticeships are registered apprenticeship programs.)

For the past 11 years, Jeremy Gonzales, a member of Local 2232 has dedicated himself to a career as a union millwright. Being a millwright comes with a lot of challenges, in which a lot of people do not talk about until they have walked in the shoes of a millwright. No job is ever the same and each day presents a slate of new challenges. Being a millwright is not for the faint of heart. But with a whole lot of faith and a lot of hard work, it is a rewarding career.

Tennessee members: Vote NO on Amendment 1

Council collaborating to fight falsely named ‘right-to-work’ amendment

International Training Center updates COVID-19 vaccination policy

Local 1263 gives back to community on National Public Lands Day.

Eastern Regional Director, Logan Brown and members of Local 1263 celebrated National Public Lands Day by giving back to their community. On September 24, Thurmond Lake held one of its largest single-day volunteer projects. During the event, Brown and other volunteer members built four life jacket loaner stations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These loaner stations will be placed at various spots around the lake for people to access for free.

Oklahoma candidates speak at SSMRC staff/delegate meeting

Several candidates running for office in Oklahoma spoke about labor issues during our September staff and delegate meeting in Oklahoma City. The candidates included Joy Hofmeister, who is running for governor, U.S. Senate candidates Kendra Horn and Madison Horn, and labor-commissioner candidate Leslie Osborn.

Mark Brown, a 15-year carpenter business representative, financial officer, and trustee, began working as training director of the Southeastern Carpenters Training Trust Fund in March, helping enrich the skills of millwrights in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Monte Thompson, a 17-year millwright and member of Local 2232, which covers Houston and the Gulf Coast region of Texas, began working as a business representative for Local 2232 in early July.

Member Spotlight: Austin Bryant

From a young age, Local 216’s Austin Bryant knew he was destined to work in the construction industry. While in high school, Bryant completed two machine shop classes where he learned how to run lathes and mills along with designing and manufacturing components. After taking some time to attend community college and the economic collapse in 2008, Bryant chose to pursue a career in machining with a tool and dye mechanic shop. After working under a master machinist for two years, Bryant decided it was time for a career change.

$1 Billion in Airport Funding to Benefit Union Millwrights and Contractors

U.S. Supreme Court blocks OSHA vaccine mandate

On Jan. 13, the Supreme Court of the United States blocked a mandate from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that would have required all employers with 100 or more employees to require those employees to either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or to be tested weekly and wear masks at work.
